He had a plan. A simple, deeply human plan — complete his digital marketing course, find a stable job, and become the support his family had been counting on. On the night of March 4, 2026, that plan ended in the lanes of JJ Colony, Uttam Nagar, West Delhi, when 26-year-old Tarun Kumar was attacked by a group of men and beaten so severely that he did not survive.
What had started as a Holi evening — children playing on terraces, families winding down, the usual sounds of a neighbourhood festival — escalated into something nobody in that lane will forget. By the time police reached the spot, Tarun was lying on the road with severe head injuries. He was rushed to a hospital but succumbed the following morning, on March 5.
Nine people have since been arrested. A minor has been apprehended. Demolition drives have been carried out against the property of the main accused. And a grieving father is now demanding a CBI inquiry — because he does not just want justice. He wants it to be seen.
What Happened That Night
The sequence of events, as pieced together from police statements and family accounts, began with something painfully ordinary.
An 11-year-old girl, playing Holi from her terrace, threw a water balloon filled with coloured water that accidentally burst and splashed on a woman standing nearby. The girl’s family apologised immediately. It should have ended there.
It did not.
According to Tarun’s uncle, Tek Chand, “We apologised, but she didn’t listen and called her relatives, picking up a fight with us.” The woman, belonging to a different community, allegedly gathered family members and others who came to the spot. What began as a neighbourhood argument between two families — both originally from Rajasthan, both living in the same colony — turned violent.
Tarun Kumar had returned home after celebrating Holi with friends and was not initially involved in the dispute. However, as he reached the lane near his house, he was allegedly surrounded by the attackers. Police said he was brutally assaulted with iron rods, sticks, bricks and stones, suffering severe head injuries.
His father, Memraj, alleged: “My son had gone out to play Holi with his friends. When he came back, they were waiting for him. They attacked him brutally and killed him.”
Tek Chand added: “They thrashed him brutally and even threw a big stone on his chest when he was lying injured on the road.”
Tarun was rushed to hospital but did not survive. He died on the morning of March 5.
Who Was Tarun Kumar
The facts of that violent night tell one part of the story. His family tells another — quieter, more painful part.
Tarun Kumar was pursuing courses in digital marketing and interior designing. His father Memraj described him simply, in the way parents describe children who have become their entire world. “He was our hope. He was doing a course in digital marketing and told us he would become our support,” Memraj said.
He was 26. He had not yet started earning. He was still studying, still preparing, still believing that education would open the right doors. The family had been waiting for that moment — the moment Tarun would start bringing something home. That moment will not come now.
There are no words that adequately fill that absence. Families like Tarun’s build everything around the idea of a better tomorrow. When that tomorrow is taken, what is left is not just grief — it is a plan with no one left to carry it forward.
The Aftermath — Protests, Arson, and a City on Edge
News of Tarun’s death did not stay inside his home. It spread through Uttam Nagar and beyond, and the reaction was immediate and volatile.
His death on Thursday morning led to protests in Uttam Nagar area, as protesters demanded justice. On Friday night, some vehicles were also set ablaze. Roads were blocked. Slogans were raised outside Uttam Nagar Police Station. The situation required significant security deployment.
Delhi Police and Rapid Action Force were deployed in the locality in the capital’s South West district amid heightened tensions. Security forces have maintained a presence in JJ Colony and surrounding areas since, closely monitoring the situation to prevent further escalation.
Political responses came swiftly. BJP MP Kamaljeet Sehrawat said: “It is very shameful, when a kid hits someone by mistake and such an incident was carried out. We are consoling the family and the accused will not be spared at any cost.”
Delhi Health Minister Pankaj Singh visited the family and assured them of full accountability. “Seven people have been arrested,” he said. “Accurate investigation will definitely be done and the accused will be subjected to the strictest punishment.”
Nine Arrested, Minor Apprehended
Police have moved swiftly and comprehensively on the legal front.
Nine suspects have been arrested to date, including a minor in the first seven captures, with 38-year-old Imran alias Bunty being the latest, arrested on Saturday, March 7, as the eighth arrest. The main accused in the case has been identified as Nizamuddin.
Authorities have also added provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act to the case during the course of the investigation. A murder case has been formally registered. The investigation is ongoing, with police stating that two to three more individuals are still being tracked.
Meanwhile, Tarun’s father Memraj has made his position on the investigation clear. He is not satisfied with a routine police inquiry. He has demanded a CBI investigation — one that is fast, fair, and fully transparent. “Nothing less,” he said.
MCD Demolition: Bulldozer Action Against the Accused’s Property
In parallel to the criminal proceedings, civic authorities have taken action on the ground.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi carried out a demolition drive against the house of the main accused, identified as Nizamuddin, as the investigation into the violent clash continues.
Delhi Minister Pankaj Singh reinforced this resolve: “The police have arrested 9 people. The search for 2–3 more individuals continues. Whoever commits such an incident will not be spared. Their house is also illegal. Action is being taken against their house as well.”
The demolition has been described by authorities as an enforcement action against unauthorised construction — though it has also sent a clear political message in the aftermath of a case that has drawn national attention.
A Festival That Should Have Been Different
Every year, Holi is described as a festival of colours, of forgiveness, of letting old tensions dissolve in a burst of celebration. The incident in Uttam Nagar is a reminder of how quickly that ideal can unravel — and how devastating the consequences can be when it does.
A child threw a balloon. A family apologised. A young man — who had nothing to do with the original argument, who was simply walking home after celebrating with friends — never made it through his front door.
The festival of Holi, celebrated across India with colours, music and water play, is widely regarded as a time for reconciliation and social bonding. The incident in Uttam Nagar has therefore cast a shadow over what is typically one of the country’s most joyful festivals. Residents in the locality expressed shock that celebrations meant to bring people together ended in tragedy.
Tarun Kumar’s family is not thinking about festivals right now. They are thinking about a son who was studying. A son who had a plan. A son who told his father he would become their support.
He was 26. He deserved the chance to keep that promise.
What Happens Next
The police investigation continues. More arrests are expected. The courts will determine the legal fate of those already in custody.
But for Memraj, and for everyone in that JJ Colony lane who watched what happened to Tarun, the question is simpler and harder than any legal proceeding. It is the question families always ask when something this senseless happens:
Why?
